The armour of God: truth

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth..." (Ephesians 6: 10-14)

Paul in this passage explains the importance for us as Christians to put on the whole armour of God. The first piece of the armour that Paul spoke of is truth."…therefore, having girded your waist with truth…" (Ephesians 6: 13)

"Unlike those soldiers, our battle is not physical but spiritual,
our enemy is the king of lies.
..
"

To ‘gird your loins’ in Roman times meant to protect the area just above the waist (lower abdomen). Roman soldiers, as well as other armies, considered this area of the body to be the most vulnerable in battle. As a result, extra effort was made by soldiers to protect their lower abdomen.

Paul likewise is instructing us to gird ourselves (faith) in truth. Unlike those soldiers, our battle is not physical but spiritual, our enemy is the king of lies. The devil will always bring doubts, suggestions and questions to our minds. This is why the first piece of God’s armour is truth. If you are not true to yourself, then you have already fallen for the tricks of the devil.

Because of this, we must strive to be sincere in our faith, have integrity and stay true. Truthfulness is the first piece of God’s armour that we need to withstand in the evil day.
