UCKG Opens Edmonton Food Bank

Edmonton is getting a new food bank at its local UCKG HelpCentre, on Saturday 21 November, thanks to the work of the HelpCentre members in the area. Led by Pastor Lucas, who runs the HelpCentre, they are among the first to be implementing a nationwide UCKG initiative to set up food banks in some of the country’s more deprived areas.

The food bank will be located at the HelpCentre on 6a Sterling Way, N18 2XZ, and will be open from 11am until 1pm every Saturday. Supplies of non-perishable foods and essential toiletries are being donated by the members of the HelpCentre, which is a Pentecostal Christian church.

Initially, Pastor Lucas and his team are hoping to be able to help between 20 and 30 households in need each week, and to reach out to more as they are able to increase their supplies.

“With homelessness, a high level of evictions from private rental properties and child poverty all major problems in this area, everything we can do will help,” he said.

“Although Edmonton is often described as a leafy suburb, a shocking one in three of the borough’s children lived in poverty at the start of this year, while the childhood obesity rate here was the fifth-worst in London. I have no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation even worse.”

Anyone who would like to contribute with donations of food should contact Pastor Lucas at the HelpCentre or by e-mail to co.edm@uckg.com.
