The story of Joshua, King of Israel, is an inspiring account that shows us that we can summon supernatural faith when needed. Joshua, with the help of God, conquered many cities, such as Jericho and Ai.
When the word spread that Joshua and his God were formidable, the people of Gibeon – a mighty royal city – tricked him into making peace with them. Fearing that they would fall next, the people of Gibeon went to great lengths just to be spared, so they asked if they could live as servers for Israel.
When the king of Jerusalem heard about all that Joshua had done, and that a great city such as Gibeon had made a peace treaty with him, he rounded up four other kings and waged war against Joshua.
However, the Lord said to Joshua: “Do not be afraid of them, for I have given them into your hand. Not a single man can stand before you” (Joshua 10:8).
Although Joshua and the Israelites were greatly outnumbered, he had faith in the Lord’s promise. On that day, Israel “struck” their enemies “with overwhelming force”. (Joshua 10:10)
While big hailstones contributed to Joshua’s victory, he did not wait for nature to do his job – he played his part. During the battle, Joshua took an action of faith and commanded the sun and the moon to stop – something that had never happened before. He realised that if the sun went down, his enemies would flee and have an opportunity to overcome them.
In the same way as Joshua, those who serve God today need to cause the supernatural to happen by testing their faith. Joshua’s challenge was to call upon God’s help in front of his soldiers (Joshua 10:12). Had he tried on his own and failed, he would have lost his credibility and his leadership of his whole troop.
So, if Joshua had authority over the works of God (sun and moon), would we not have much more authority over evil? However, for us to have authority in our lives, we have to have faith even when we face challenging circumstances.
