The risks of hot weather on mental health!

The summer season for most people means enjoying warm days out with the family, eating ice-cream and frequent visits to the local park. When you walk outside, everyone appears to be much lighter and generally happier than usual.

This is the body’s natural reaction when we are exposed to sunlight, it releases serotonin (the hormone that makes us feel happy). In simple, the sun boosts our mood!

However, scientists have found that surges in the climate lead to more mental health emergencies. I’m sure you are familiar with the risks associated with hot weather such as dehydration and heatstroke. Studies show that extreme weather can also have a negative impact on people’s mental health.

Experts believe that this could be due to the increase in discomfort, irritation and the inability to sleep during hot nights. Men also have a higher risk than women, and scientists believe that it’s because they are less likely to seek early help.

That being said, it is important that you are cautious to take care of your health, both physically and mentally during the warmer weather that we are experiencing. Be sure to remain hydrated, wear weather appropriate clothing and to nourish yourself with a balanced and nutritious diet.
