Perinatal depression – what are the signs?

Perinatal depression

Pregnancy and early motherhood can be a rollercoaster of emotions, but societal expectation is that this period should be a joyful experience.

Unfortunately, according to the Royal College of Midwives this is not always the case. With up to 20% of women developing anxiety or depression during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby, mental health is a common issue seen among new and expecting mothers.

Researchers say that in the years 2018-2020, suicide was the leading cause of maternal death in the first year after birth. Therefore, being aware of the signs of this prevalent issue and the available support to you is necessary, so that if you are experiencing this, you can receive help sooner!

Everyone’s reaction to pregnancy and early motherhood is different, but some of the signs of perinatal depression include feeling down, restless or numb which can lead to finding no pleasure in life or the things you usually enjoyed.

As a consequence, it is common to notice an extremely reduced or increased appetite, difficulty sleeping, as well as a drop in your self-confidence or self-esteem. Many mothers also report that they felt isolated and are unable to relate to other people as before.

If you are experiencing severe difficulty dealing with anything related to this topic, seeking help is crucial. Speaking with your GP is a good place to start, as they can refer you to the most suitable treatment for your individual case.

Additionally, there are many studies that prove that speaking to someone can have positive effects on your mental health. Speaking with your loved ones about what you are going through will help to relieve these negative feelings, so don’t suffer in silence.
