Netflix series catalyses indignation amongst Christians

Netflix

“The Elect” is the latest release on Netflix’s catalogue of original series. The adaptation of the comic book American Jesus in just a few weeks of release, achieved prominence and divided opinions about its enigmatic plot.

Portraying a boy with powers similar to those of Jesus Christ was not the only reason for the repercussion among spectators, because the production later reveals a mystery considered, by many, disturbing: the young man is in fact the son of Lucifer!

The series released at TUDUM 2023 tells of the discovery of a new “messiah”, Jodie, who starts to help his community after discovering powers similar to those of Jesus, such as walking on water, turning water into wine and resurrecting the dead. However, as the story unfolds, the plot reveals the boy’s true identity, he is the son of Satan.

In contrast to the evaluations presented by the streaming platform, evangelical and Catholic communities around the world disapproved of the content shown in the production. Despite being based on the writings of Revelation 13 – where the beast emerges from the Earth with authority and deception – the recently released series became the centre of controversy for disrespect and blasphemy.

When considering the production as “problematic”, Mark Millar, creator of the comics that inspired the series, spoke out about the criticism and said he was not interested “in making jokes about this subject. The story is treated with complete seriousness.”

Works and cultural expressions that use the Holy Scriptures as a basis to attract their audience through repercussion have always existed and will continue to be produced. And, even if mocking the Christian faith is not a justified intention, it is up to each person to develop the ability to evaluate what is or is not harmful to their spiritual health.

Therefore, do not allow yourself to be easily influenced by what is presented to you, nor make concessions to what attacks your faith. Have as a guide the ideas and thoughts transmitted by God in His Word, which is the only absolute truth.

And if you have been feeding your mind with content that causes you doubts or internal conflicts, decontaminate yourself!

“Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. (Ephesians 5.6)
