Love of money: the trap that destroys prosperity

Love for money

Since the beginning of humanity, the need to exchange products has been identified as a way of acquiring what is necessary for survival. At one time, non-perishable items played the role of money, such as copper, grains, gold, silver and salt.

That is until it evolved into the system we now know as money, which can be found in the form of physical cash or electronic money.

Considering that money is an instrument used to carry out commercial exchanges in society, it must be admitted that it is necessary. However, it can be a real trap, as riches are one of the countless weaknesses of human beings.

Nowadays, money is seen as one of the paths to happiness. A study carried out by the Harvard Business School in the United States, with four thousand millionaires from various countries, identified an interesting picture.

Even though they had already reached the figure of millions, a quarter of those interviewed stated that to be “happy” they would need their wealth to increase by 1,000%.

Would happiness come if they achieved this goal or would it be necessary to go further to understand that “having” cannot be translated into “being”?

The need to always have more money and do whatever it takes to earn it is not the solution to problems, but rather their origin, as the Bible advises:

“But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, and snare, and in many foolish and harmful lusts, which plunge men into perdition and ruin. Because the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil; and in this covetousness some fell away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many pains” (1 Timothy 6:9-10).

Without balance, those who put money above all else become blinded by the glare of the world. There are people who, for the love of money, don’t talk to a family member, kill, steal and deceive. In fact, money is a great servant, but a terrible master.

The greatest danger is that money gives a false sense of security, so whoever gets carried away by this feeling begins to put achievements in the place of God, starts to say that they no longer have time for Him and begin to think that it was the strength of their own arm that led them to so many achievements.

The Lord Jesus even warned about valuing what is eternal instead of prioritising what is temporary:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume everything, and where thieves break through and steal; But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break through or steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21).

In order not to get lost on this journey, it is necessary that the focus is adjusted in the right direction.
