Can a positive word restore your health?

Health

I’m sure you’ve been there before… You were full of strength and vigour, but after hearing a negative word, you felt deflated and devoid of motivation.

A single word has the power to affect our wellbeing. This explains why when someone is diagnosed with a long-term or even terminal disease, they are instantly filled with fear.

However, according to studies, a positive word has been proven to help fight disease! This is because there is a direct link between a person’s mind and their body.

Physicians have noticed that two patients with a similar diagnosis, age, and treatment plan can experience contrasting results. They said that one of the few apparent discrepancies was that one patient was pessimistic, whilst the other had a hope and the will to live.

The power of a positive mindset and emotions and its ability to cure disease is debated until today; however, many patients have attested to this.

A 31-year-old patient with advanced stage 4 cancer expressed, “I would get out of bed every morning as if nothing was wrong. I may have known I was going to have to face things and could feel sick during the day, but I never got out of bed that way.” Thirty years later, she is still alive and leading an active life.

However, it may be easier said than done to apply this kind of attitude. The Mental Health Foundation says that people experiencing physical health conditions have a higher risk of also developing mental health issues. Could mere words really help them come out of the negative mindset they are in and, above all, contribute to their healing?
