Black Friday: 7 precautions for shopping online

black friday

Black Friday is a traditional date for physical and online stores to offer big sales and discounts. However, with so many offers and promotions made during this period, it is important that consumers adopt measures to protect themselves against fraud and other threats that can harm their pocket, especially on online commerce platforms.

To help consumers who want to take advantage of discounts but don’t want to take risks, here are seven tips for shopping online safely on Black Friday.

1. Avoid public networks

Try not to use devices connected to public networks when shopping online, as they generally do not have any type of security mechanism. If this is your only option, do not access your bank’s website or pages where you need to enter a password.

2. Check whether websites are protected

When accessing a website, look for the padlock on the left side of the URL (the page address or link). This image attests to the presence of security protocols. Additionally, look for information about the company’s reputation, such as customer reviews and complaints to consumer protection agencies.

3. Don’t click on suspicious links

If you received promotions and offers via email, WhatsApp or other digital channel, don’t click before checking their legitimacy. Search the online store and see if it has the authenticity padlock. In the email, check if the sender is a corporate email.

4. Make use of virtual cards

Your bank may be able to issue you a virtual debit or credit card with a different number to that of the physical version. The advantage is that it can be valid for a single operation or you can choose whether to block it immediately after making the purchase. Some issuers offer two types: a temporary virtual card, with a predetermined validity, and a recurring one, which can be saved on websites and applications for future purchases.

5. Activate purchase confirmation

Contact your card issuer and activate the transaction confirmation alert via SMS, push (another form of notification via cell phone) or any means of communication, such as email. So, you can have full control over your card usage, in real time.

6. Dispute unrecognised transactions

Card purchases offer a unique guarantee compared to other payment methods. One of the advantages is the ability to dispute unrecognised transactions or purchases that were not delivered by the shop. This guarantee allows consumers to address any commercial disagreements they may have. In these cases, the customer must contact the card issuer, who, after analysing the case, can cancel the transaction or refund the amount.

7. Plan your purchases

The most important tip of all is to pay attention and plan your spending. This will help you avoid surprises when making a purchase. Furthermore, it is always good to be wary of very tempting promotions and offers, as the possibility of them being a scam is high. With these guidelines, you can stay safe, take advantage of discounts and not compromise your finances.
