Rescue Of Dignity Hosts Inmates’ Family Day

Monday 10th October 2011

The Rescue Of Dignity (ROD) group at the UCKG HelpCentre in Finsbury Park is holding a support event for prisoners’ families at the Rainbow Theatre, 232 Seven Sisters Road on Saturday, 15 October.  Doors will open at 12.30pm and the event starts promptly at 1pm.

The Inmates’ Family Day is free and open to anyone affected by the imprisonment of an offender in the family, or who anticipates this happening in the near future.  The ROD group expects to attract a considerable number of newcomers as well as people it is already supporting in London and from further afield.

Charles Ajorgbor, the organiser and leader of the ROD group, said: “Prisoners’ families are a neglected part of society, whose needs are largely overlooked.  They haven’t committed any crime themselves, but it can seem as if they are being punished as much or more than the relative who is doing time.

“Life can be particularly difficult for families with young children and where innocent family members are affected by disabilities, or include very elderly parents.  Many partners and close relatives really struggle to prevent families from falling apart altogether.”

In hosting the event, the UCKG HelpCentre’s aim is to help inmates’ families cope with both immediate and longer term issues. The afternoon offers a full schedule of advice and support, illustrated with real-life experiences from prisoners’ families and from a former – now reformed – inmate.

“Role-play will be used to highlight some of the more important issues, because it is a good way to connect with an audience and we think that attendees will find it particularly helpful,” Charles added.

Light refreshments will be served; and since the UCKG HelpCentre is a Christian organisation, prayers will be said for all concerned.

If you or someone you know is affected by the imprisonment of a family member or close friend, you will be welcomed as our special guests at this event.  Please call the 24-hours helpline on 020 7686 6000 or visit our website universalchurch.uk.
