Drama, dance, poetry and music will all feature in Where U Going? a lively and thought-provoking show for young people at the Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park on Saturday November 19th. Admission is free.
Starting at 3pm the performance will be by members of the UCKG HelpCentre’s youth group, VYG, from its branches in Finsbury Park, Stamford Hill, Hackney, Brixton, Peckham, Stratford and Edmonton. A total of 27 young people take part – 12 in the drama, eight dancing, six in the music, and one more reading poetry.
The show focuses on what teenagers and twenty-somethings should be doing so that their lives turn out the way they want, using powerful material written by the VYG members themselves. It includes strong autobiographical influences as three of contributors will be telling their own stories and how the VYG helped them.
“The decisions we all make in our teens affect the course of our lives for decades to come,” said Pastor Miguel Lacerda the national VYG leader. “It’s essential we get it right; yet not everyone matures in their thinking as quickly as they grow up physically, as we saw from some of the reasons given by youngsters for their actions in last summer’s riots.
“Our aim is to use some stunning entertainment to show the younger generation that the direction of their lives is in their own hands. The consequences of today’s decisions affect their short and longer term futures, and not always for the best, if those decisions are poor.”
He continued: “It’s also important to watch out for thinking that is imposed on many youngsters via the environment they grow up in and dictates their progress or lack of it.” The Where U Going? message challenges such thinking, telling youngsters that there is no point in blaming the world around them when they can take action to establish bright and happy lives for themselves.
At the end of the show a short prayer will be offered for all in attendance. A dedicated website has been created at www.whereugoing.org that will contain more information nearer to the event.
