When Your Own Will Misleads You and the Past Becomes a Burden

Regrets 2

Have you ever looked back and wondered how different your life might be if you had made another choice? A word left unsaid, a hasty decision, or a path followed without much thought – almost everyone carries at least one moment they wish they could revisit, asking themselves, “What if I had chosen differently?

This feeling is more common than many realise. Recent surveys in the UK indicate that around 58% of Britons would advise their younger selves to make better life choices, while 47% admit to spending considerable time – potentially amounting to six days a year – dwelling on past decisions.

Regret is a universal human experience that reveals how deeply our choices shape our present and future. Even those who seem to have ‘made it’ are not exempt. Fashion icon Giorgio Armani once reflected that his greatest regret was working too much and not spending enough time with family and friends. Despite his global success and recognition, his words reveal a sobering truth: achievements don’t erase the consequences of misplaced priorities.

The Bible explains why this happens and warns us plainly: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Our own will — our emotions, impulses and desires — can easily mislead us. What feels right in the moment doesn’t always lead to what is ultimately right.

Many poor decisions stem from trusting our hearts without seeking God’s guidance. That is why prioritising His will over our own is essential. God’s will is perfect, even when it challenges our personal desires. When you pray for God’s will to be done, even when it contradicts your own, you are not losing. You are gaining, because God sees what we cannot see ahead.

When Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, “Not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39), He provided the ultimate example of prioritising God’s will. In that moment, His surrender may have appeared as a loss to human eyes, yet it led to the greatest victory of all: our opportunity for salvation.

If you want to learn how to truly align your life with God’s, avoiding future regrets, there’s no better way to do so than by knowing His will, which is revealed in His Word. Join us this Wednesday, 24 December, for our Bible Study, as we reach the conclusion of the series The Mysteries of Gethsemane.
