54 Years of Marriage: What is the Secret?

Bp Macedo and Mrs Ester
This Thursday, 18 December, Bishop Macedo, founder of the Universal Church, and his wife, Ester Bezerra, celebrate 54 years of marriage – a remarkable journey built on faith, commitment and shared purpose.

When Bishop Macedo speaks about marriage, he often explains that faith, just like married life, must be practical. God, he says, does not look for empty words or fleeting emotions, but for actions. In the same way, true love is not based solely on feelings; it is proven through total surrender.

Reflecting on their 54 years together, he recalls a decision they made from the very beginning: both chose to give their lives to one another completely. He became hers, and she became his. This, he says, is the essence of genuine love – full dedication and genuine commitment.

He also explains that when there is true surrender between husband and wife, the two become one flesh, as taught in the Word of God. This principle, he explains, applies equally to our relationship with God. “To love God is to give oneself entirely – consciously, practically and definitively.”

Reaching such a milestone does not happen without effort. Along the way, it is necessary to identify and cut off bad roots – negative attitudes, past hurts or behaviours that can slowly damage a relationship. Left unchecked, these roots grow silently and affect even the strongest marriage.
