When the World Promises Everything but Delivers Nothing

Shining World

We live in a world that shines before our eyes, constantly offering what appears to be everything our souls desire: comfort, pleasure, well-being, and satisfaction. Everywhere we look, we are invited to slow down, be entertained, and pursue instant enjoyment.

Yet, behind this attractive sparkle lies an undeniable truth: much of what looks so appealing is, in fact, an illusion. Many who seem to have everything—success, wealth, status, and recognition—still feel profoundly unfulfilled, carrying an inner emptiness that nothing in this world can fill. This is the kingdom of the world; a realm of illusion and deception.

When we think about a kingdom, we often think of a physical territory ruled by a king, inhabited by subjects who live under his authority and are expected to show loyalty and obedience. Films and books that shaped our childhood imaginations frequently portray this image.

But here, we are speaking about spiritual kingdoms. In the spiritual realm, there are only two kingdoms: the Kingdom of God, which is light, and the kingdom of the world, which is darkness. Whether we realise it or not, each of us belongs to one of these two kingdoms, and what determines where we belong are our actions and decisions.

God created everything perfectly and entrusted mankind with authority over the Earth. However, when humanity chose disobedience, that authority was handed over to evil, breaking our communion with God. This gave rise to the kingdom of the world—a realm filled with corruption and subject to evil. This is why we witness so much cruelty, hatred, violence, and destruction around us.

The kingdom of the world is made up of people who reject limits, correction, order, and commitment to the truth. They live to satisfy their own desires, leading to selfishness, greed, and self-centeredness. They refuse God’s rule yet still wish to enjoy what He created. But the Bible is clear: “Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4).

In contrast, the Kingdom of God frees us from the dominion of this world—marked by sadness and hatred. God’s Kingdom, which we access through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus on the Cross, is a realm of justice and true peace, born from a relationship with God and independent of external circumstances. It’s not a false peace but rather an inner strength that remains even amidst struggles.

The Kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world coexist, yet they never mix. Their boundaries are not physical or visible; they are spiritual. Just as oil and water can occupy the same container but never blend due to their differing natures, these two kingdoms exist simultaneously but stand in complete opposition to one another.

This is why there is no neutrality. No one can live partially in one kingdom and partially in the other. Jesus made this very clear: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.” (Matthew 6:24).

The Kingdom of God is accessible to everyone who wishes to live a righteous, honest, and truthful life. However, entry into this Kingdom is reserved for the humble—those who accept and submit to God’s invitation. God doesn’t force His Kingdom upon anyone. He presents it, and each person must choose whether to enter.

We can choose to continue following the rules of the kingdom of this world, bearing the weight of sin and guilt, or we can decide to be part of the Kingdom of God, where there is freedom, truth, and life.
