Tips for Coping in the Heat of the Summer

Heatwave

The UK is experiencing unusually high temperatures this summer, with London reaching highs of 32°C and other regions not far behind. While the sunshine is a welcoming change, it’s essential to stay safe and comfortable. Here are some tips to help you cope with the heatwave:

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is crucial during hot weather. Aim for at least 2–3 litres per day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, as they can lead to dehydration. For added hydration, consider consuming water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.

Limit Sun Exposure

Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours – especially between 11 am and 3pm, when the sun’s rays are strongest. If you need to be outside, seek shade whenever possible, wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses if you can, and apply a high SPF sunscreen regularly to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Keep Your Living Space Cool

Close curtains and blinds during the day to block out the sun’s heat. If you have fans, use them strategically to circulate air. In the evening, open windows to let cooler air in, if it’s safe to do so.

Adjust Your Routine

If possible, schedule outdoor activities or errands for early morning or late evening, when temperatures are lower. Also, take frequent breaks if you’re working or exercising outdoors and listen to your body – if you feel dizzy, weak or nauseous, seek shade and hydrate immediately.

Stay Informed

Keep an eye on the weather forecast and heat advisories issued by local authorities. This helps you prepare ahead of time and make informed decisions about your plans.

Look Out for Vulnerable People

Check in on your elderly family members, neighbours and others who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Ensure they have access to cool environments, stay hydrated and are aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Heat affects everyone differently, so be mindful of your body’s signals and take necessary precautions. Stay cool and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!
