Last Thursday at the Cathedral of Miracles, ‘Combating a Bland Love Life’ continued in the Love Therapy seminar, with Bishop James and Helena Marques discussing ‘The Salt Alliance’ – a symbol of a lasting pact.
Now, you might be wondering: what does salt have to do with love and marriage? The connection might surprise you.
In Numbers 18:19, God says to Aaron, the priest: “All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you and your sons and daughters with you as an ordinance forever; it is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord with you and your descendants with you.”
God made a covenant with Aaron and his descendants – “a covenant of salt forever.” In biblical times, salt was essential for preserving food and preventing it from spoiling. So, when God described His covenant in this way, it was His way of saying, this is firm, lasting and incorruptible.
We see the same principle in 2 Chronicles 13:5: “Should you not know that the Lord God of Israel gave the dominion over Israel to David forever, to him and his sons, by a covenant of salt?” David’s reign was also established through a salt covenant, showing that it was eternal and could not be undone.
Salt, therefore, represents:
Marriage, as a divine institution, must reflect these same qualities. Without “salt”, marriage is fragile, easily broken and at risk of ending. But with salt, the relationship is preserved, strengthened and full of flavour – a partnership that truly lasts a lifetime.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where words often don’t carry much weight. Promises are broken easily, commitments are brushed aside, and this lack of character seeps into marriages.
But Jesus made it very clear in Matthew 5:37: “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’” Truth is the foundation of trust, and trust is what love stands on. Without truth, there is no trust. Without trust, there is no love.
It’s not just betrayal that destroys marriages – lies do too. Once credibility is lost, even genuine words begin to sound doubtful. That’s why couples need to build their relationship on truth from the very beginning.
Marriage, as God intended, is not something disposable or temporary. It’s a covenant – a lifelong alliance. A marriage lived with “salt” is one where:
And in that kind of marriage, love doesn’t just survive – it thrives.
If you feel your relationship could use some of this “salt”, why not join the Love Therapy seminars? They take place every Thursday at 8pm. Come and strengthen your love life, restore trust, and learn how to live a covenant that lasts.
