The Power of Salt in a Relationship

Smiling Couple
Over the past few weeks in the Love Therapy Seminars, we have been exploring how to combat a bland love life. In the most recent meeting, Bishop James Marques and his wife Helena Marques explained the meaning of salt, based on Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned?”

Bishop posed a thought-provoking question: Have you ever noticed what happens when couples hit a rough patch? They go away together for a break, thinking it will help—but when they return, the problems are still there, as if they never left. Often, the real challenge isn’t the problem itself, but the absence of peace.

Think of peace as the salt you add while cooking—a simple ingredient that can completely transform a meal. Peace works in exactly the same way in relationships. When couples find peace within themselves and with each other, life together becomes calmer, simpler, and far more enjoyable.

Without peace, frustration and resentment creep in. Arguments flare, blame is thrown around, and the home can feel like a storm. James 3:11-12 reminds us: you cannot give what you do not have. If you lack peace, you cannot offer it to others.

In this context, salt represents peace. Couples with “salt” don’t rely on circumstances to sustain their love – they rest in God’s presence, where peace and stability come naturally.

But when the salt is missing, relationships lose their flavour. They turn “tasteless” when outside pressures, hurts, or fears take over. Instead of holding onto God’s principles, people often turn to the world’s standards in an attempt to add some excitement but it never truly satisfies.

So how do we restore flavour to our love lives? Real peace begins with God. When you focus on your encounter with Him and seek the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of God dwelling inside a person, transformation follows. The Holy Spirit shows you what needs to change, and as you pray and seek His guidance, peace follows and love begins to flourish.
