Low Energy? Your Diet Could Be the Reason

Low energy

Have you ever felt an unexpected wave of exhaustion in the middle of your day—whether at work, at home, or while out and about? You’re not alone, and it may not just be “ordinary tiredness.”

What we eat can significantly influence our energy levels throughout the day. Ultra-processed foods, such as ready meals, packaged snacks, sweetened cereals and fizzy drinks, are heavily manufactured with added sugars, fats, salts, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. While these products are designed to be convenient and tasty, they lack the essential nutrients your body truly needs.

These foods can trigger rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar, leaving you feeling energetic for a short time followed by a sudden crash—often referred to as a “sugar crash.” Because they are low in vital nutrients like vitamins, minerals and fibre, your body doesn’t get what it needs to sustain energy, leading to poor energy levels that many people mistakenly consider “normal tiredness.”

In contrast, a balanced diet composed of whole, minimally processed foods—such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats—supports more stable energy levels and better overall health.

According to the UK’s NHS Eatwell Guide, a healthy plate should include a mix of:

  • Starchy foods (preferably wholegrain), like brown rice, whole wheat pasta, or wholemeal bread, which provide slow-release energy.
  • Fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre.
  • Protein-rich foods, such as pulses, beans, fish, eggs and lean meats, to support muscle and metabolic function.
  • Dairy or alternatives, for calcium and additional protein.
  • Smaller amounts of healthy fats, like unsaturated oils, which are essential but calorie-dense.

This dietary pattern helps keep blood sugar levels steady, reduces inflammation, improves digestion, and supports sustained energy. When you have more energy, you feel more alert, become more productive, and achieve your goals faster. This energy also brings enthusiasm and motivation to enjoy your accomplishments.

Not to mention that when we take care of our bodies—referred to in the Bible as the temple of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 6:19)—we are pleasing Him.

Every Tuesday, we hold Health Day meetings, where you can learn even more about how to care for your overall wellbeing. These gatherings also explore how faith can be a powerful complement to medical care, helping you find strength, purpose and willpower. Join us at your nearest Universal Church.
