Hallowed Be Your Name

Hallowed Be Your Name 1
We all carry our own name, as well as the name of our parents. No one wants to see their name tarnished or associated with wrongdoing. Families who value their reputation always advise their children: “Do not tarnish our family name.” If we are mindful of the importance of safeguarding our own name, how much more, as Christians, should we be concerned about honouring the Name of the Lord Jesus, especially before unbelievers?

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches us to ask the Father that His name be sanctified in us (Matthew 6:9). But how can we truly sanctify God’s name? The Word of God says:

But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went. “Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord,” says the Lord God, “when I am hallowed in you before their eyes” (Ezekiel 36:21-23).

In the scripture above, God confirms that His people carried His Name wherever they went but profaned it among the Gentiles. In other words, God’s own people put Him to shame before those who did not know Him.

What about you? Have you sanctified or profaned the Name of the Lord among your family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and even enemies?

For those who serve God, it is an opportunity for others to witness Him through them. This is why the responsibility of honouring His name is so great.
