The average working week for a full-time employee in the UK is approximately 37 hours. This means that a large part of the population works approximately eight hours a day. This is a significant amount of time and it is natural for a closer relationship to be created between colleagues.
It is in this environment, that stories, challenges and achievements are shared. However, not everyone is willing to work collaboratively. When colleagues focus only on their own needs, conflicts arise, relationships become strained and simple situations are turned into recurring problems.
It is important to understand that the workplace is made up of individuals from many different backgrounds. Some may have more education, others less; some were raised with strict discipline, while others received less guidance; some bring years of experience to the job, while others are just starting out in their careers. However, regardless of these differences, everyone needs to understand that the workplace has its own code of conduct, and mutual understanding is essential.
Workplace etiquette is a key strategy for keeping teams connected and motivated. It’s not just about formalities, it’s about showing respect and empathy. When there are clear boundaries, mutual respect, open communication, and consideration for personal space, the work environment becomes more productive and experiences fewer conflicts.
One of the biggest challenges in today’s job market is managing relationships between different generations. According to the 2024 People Management Trends report shows that 51.6% of companies struggle with age group differences, and this rises to 68.1% when working with Generation Z (born between 1996 and 2010). Older generations tend to value hierarchy and formality, while younger ones prefer authenticity. The key is to create a workplace where all ages respect each other. The role of the leaders must set clear guidelines, promote mutual understanding, and balance old and new ways of working.
It’s important to remember that change begins with each individua. It doesn’t wait for someone else to take the lead. So why not be the pioneer of respect and etiquette in your own workplace? Small acts of understanding and kindness can create a ripple effect that transforms the environment for everyone.
