Do You Have a Friend like a Brother?

Friend like a Brother
In life, we cross paths with many people, but only a few leave a lasting impression. The Bible reminds us of this when it says, “…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). When difficulties arise, they don’t just offer words – they show up, they care, and they remain. That’s the kind of friend who becomes more like family.

A true friend is someone who, even in the hardest moments, refuses to give up on you. They’re not discouraged by challenges; instead, they’re strengthened by a genuine desire to see you well.

That’s why this Sunday, 31st August, ‘The Day of the Friend Like a Brother’ will take place in all Universal Churches across the UK. Right now, you may know someone who is struggling. Perhaps, this is your chance to be the friend they really need – to listen, to comfort, to support, and to stand by their side. Sometimes, a simple gesture can make all the difference.

The Bible gives us many examples of friendships. David and Jonathan shared a bond that was unbreakable (1 Samuel 20). Jesus Himself drew close to His disciples, walking with them, teaching them, and even calling them His friends (John 15:15).

Perhaps you’ve had a friend like this – someone who stood by you when even family couldn’t. Maybe during financial struggles, health issues, or personal battles, there was one who refused to leave your side. That’s the type of friendship Proverbs describes.

So, how should you treat a friend like this?

When someone has been there for you, it’s natural to want to do the same for them. Of course, help may come in many forms – offering advice, financial support, or simply being present. But sometimes, the greatest help we can give is spiritual.

We may not have all the answers to a friend’s problems, but we can guide them to the One who does – the Lord Jesus.

Many of us first came to faith because someone invited us. Someone cared enough to pray for us, to encourage us, and to lead us closer to God. That small act of love became the start of a transformation.

Now, you have the chance to do the same for someone else. This Sunday, don’t come alone. Bring a friend with you and let’s fight in faith for our friend like brothers.
