Alphabet of Intelligent Love – T: Trust

Trust

Trust is the foundation upon which every healthy relationship is built. Without it, love becomes fragile, filled with doubts and insecurities; with it, love gains strength, peace and stability. However, trust does not develop overnight; it is cultivated over time through honesty, consistency, and integrity.

In practice, trust means being reliable and transparent. It involves demonstrating through your words and (especially) actions that your partner can feel safe with you. It also requires resisting the urge to constantly doubt or control, and instead choosing to believe in the person beside you. But it’s important to remember that trust is a two-way street. You cannot expect your partner to trust you if you don’t give them reasons to, and vice versa.

For singles, entering a potential relationship with suspicion or unresolved issues from past experiences can sabotage what could be a meaningful connection. At the same time, it’s vital to evaluate the other person’s trustworthiness, rather than rushing blindly into a relationship.

The Word of God emphasises the ultimate source of trust in Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” By first placing your trust in God, you gain the wisdom and discernment needed to build trustworthy relationships with others.

The Love Walk offers a wonderful opportunity to build or strengthen trust. By dedicating time to open conversations and attentive listening, couples can deepen the security of their bond, and singles can better discern if they are connecting with someone worthy of their trust.
