Learn how to succeed this new year with focus and determination

Are you one of those who make the famous New Year’s resolutions? In many cases, this even becomes a joke because normally these resolutions are never fulfilled. But with planning, focus, determination and, most importantly, the right attitude, your goals can finally leave your mind and become a reality. See below some important points to help you materialise your goals:

  1. Start by planning and setting your goals

“Where do you want to go? What fulfils you? Write down how you’d like your life to be a year from now. Think about your life and what you’ll need to accomplish the goal you’ve set for yourself”, suggests J. Edington – author of the book “50 Shades of Success.”

If you are finding it hard to make a list of the things you want, then write down the things you DON’T want in your life. Divide the items by areas, such as finances, love life, health, spiritual life, etc.

  1. What actions do you need to take to achieve each item on the list?

You may say that you want to lose 10kg, but how will this happen? Your goals need to leave the unconscious, irrational and emotional levels and come to the conscious level through actions.

A good way to start achieving this goal, for example, would be to write down everything you eat during the week – the time, the quantity and type of food. At the end of this period, you will have a clearer idea of how you have been eating and what changes you need to implement to your diet.

In the same way, if your goal is to pay off a debt, write all your expenditures down to the penny, specifying exactly what you bought or paid off, as well as the dates and times. This way, you will be able to identify your spending pattern, understand where your money is going and know exactly what habits you need to change in order to achieve your goal.

  1. Set a deadline

Now that you know what you want to achieve and what you should do to reach your goal, set a deadline. How long will it take for you to save the first £100 to pay off your debt, or to lose the first kilos? When will you have completed your goal?

Without a specific deadline, your plan will be incomplete and you could sabotage yourself by losing your focus or procrastinating. If you do this, your goals will become just another unfulfilled promise.

  1. Be determined, committed, and persevere

Pursuing goals requires sacrifice. You will have to give up many things and, many times, discouragement will knock on your door. In these moments, think about what will happen when you reach your goal. This will give you the strength to carry on.

Remember: you are responsible for your success and your failures. However, you can learn from your mistakes and turn them into knowledge needed to achieve even greater victories.

  1. Present your plans to God

Pray, asking God for strength and direction. Put Him before everything. With the Creator by your side, even what was supposed to go wrong will go right.

“Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)
