You’ve Waited Long Enough

Waiting
Sometimes in life, we find ourselves stuck — waiting, hoping, crying out, and wondering if things will ever change.

In the Gospel of John, there’s a powerful story about a man who had been paralysed for 38 years. He would lie beside the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, a place where the sick gathered every day waiting for a miracle. At a certain time, an angel would go down into the pool and stir the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well from whatever disease they had.

But this man had no one to help him. Time and time again, others got in ahead of him. He was overlooked, forgotten, and left behind in his pain.

When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been in that predicament for a long time, He said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.” (John 5:8-9)

It’s easy to think these stories are ancient history. But suffering, delay, and being left without help are still very much part of life today.

Take the tragic story of Sarah de Lagarde, a mother of two who, in September 2022, slipped on a wet platform at a London Underground station. She fell into the gap between the train and the platform and was left undiscovered on the tracks for 15 minutes, despite crying out for help.

She was struck by two trains, resulting in the loss of her arm and leg. Sarah now uses prosthetic limbs, including a bionic arm. She has spoken about losing her independence, her dignity, and something as personal as the ability to hug her children with both arms.

Sarah cried out — but like the man at the pool, she laid there helpless, waiting for someone to come.

Perhaps you too, are facing your own battle in your physical well-being. Maybe you feel like the paralysed man at Bethesda — stuck and forgotten or maybe, like Sarah, you’ve cried out for help and felt unheard.
