A recent study published in JAMA Network Open looked at nearly 479,723 adults in Great Britain over a period of about 13 years. The research found that those who cycled, or combined cycling with other means of transportation, had a 19% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 22% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared to individuals who used more passive modes of travel.
These findings suggest that cycling is not only effective for improving physical fitness but also may help protect your brain as you age. The mental engagement required for navigation, balance and situational awareness stimulates cognitive functions.
