In a competition, first place means you excelled among all the others. When picking players for a team, the first one chosen is considered the best. The first place is always associated the foremost in position, rank or importance. Although second and third places aren’t bad, everyone enters a competition to win first prize, to be the winner.
From a spiritual point of view, your life is the top prize, and you choose who you give it to. That person will consequently become your priority. All the decisions you make will revolve around this choice. But did you know that the person who occupies the first place in your life has a huge effect on your quality of life? When it comes to your life, what or who has been using your first oil? Who receives the best of your strength, time and energy? Whoever or whatever receives the best of you, is the one who has been first in your life.
Think about it, when you first wake up, what is the first thing you do? When you work, what do you plan on doing with the money you earn? When you have time off, what do you spend it on? All these things show what’s important to you.
This is why God accepts no other place than first in our lives! He knows that this is the only place that really matters! In this world nothing is certain and we are vulnerable to losing anything we have, but if we make God the number 1 in our life, He’s Someone we would never lose! Though we may have losses in life, we would never lose our greatest treasure: God.
And because He knows that being first goes beyond words, we show that He is indeed the first in our lives by offering the first fruits of our life to Him! This small gesture of obedience speaks a whole lot louder than words. The children of Israel knew that and would bring the tithe of their abundant earnings, signifying their life.
“As soon as the commandment was circulated, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of grain and wine, oil and honey, and of all the produce of the field; and they brought in abundantly the tithe of everything.” (2 Chronicles 31:5)
God wants to receive the best of us. And by giving Him our best, our obedience will need to be followed by trust… Trust that if we give Him the best, the first oil of our lives, He will supply all our needs.
