What Does It Mean to Be An Overcomer?

News 5 2

The Cambridge Dictionary defines an “overcomer” as someone who defeats or successfully deals with a challenge. In essence, when you overcome something, you’re a winner.

In everyday life, we often hear about “being a winner.” For most people, it might mean owning a beautiful home, driving a luxury car, wearing designer clothes, or enjoying extravagant holidays. For others, it means having a loving family, staying healthy, or achieving a lifelong dream. These are the markers of success that society celebrates.

But when we turn to the Bible, the idea of a “winner” takes on a whole new meaning—one that goes far beyond material wealth or personal accomplishments.

Jesus makes a powerful statement: “And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—He shall rule them with a rod of iron; they shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’ as I also have received from My Father; and I will give him the morning star.” (Revelation 2:26-29).

Here, “overcoming” is not about conquering life’s challenges for personal gain. It’s about building a genuine relationship with Jesus, living according to His Word, and practising faith in everyday life. The word “keep” implies more than simply believing—it’s about actively following and living out what we learn from Him.

So, what does it mean to be a winner in God’s eyes? It’s not measured by what we own or how famous we are. The true winner is the one who embraces eternal life, who follows Jesus faithfully, and who allows His light to shine through them.

The reward offered by God for those who overcome goes far beyond what this world can provide. But the question arises: what, in fact, does this special promise of the Morning Star mean?
