What a Soldier’s Armour Can Teach Us About Protecting Our Faith

Armour

Throughout history, many warriors – from medieval British knights to ancient Roman soldiers –went into battle equipped with strong, intricate armours designed for one crucial purpose: to shield them from enemy blows. In an age filled with physical threats, each piece of armour had a specific role, guarding the most vulnerable parts of the body.

Today, while we may not wear metal armour or engage in physical battles, we are involved in a much more serious spiritual battle: the fight to defend and preserve our faith. Just as a soldier would never go into battle without their full armour, we must also equip ourselves with spiritual protections to remain firm in our beliefs.

Let’s take a closer look at some specific parts of a knight’s armour and how each piece offers a powerful lesson for defending our faith:

Helmet – The helmet protected the knight’s head from potentially fatal strikes. Spiritually, our minds are often the first target of attack. Doubts, fears and negative thoughts can creep in if we are not vigilant. To safeguard our faith, we must guard our thoughts by being mindful of the content we consume, praying, meditating regularly on the Word of God and keeping our minds always connected to Him.

Cuirass (Breastplate) – The cuirass covered the chest and vital organs, especially the heart. In the same way, our hearts must be protected from harmful feelings such as hatred, bitterness, envy and grudges. These negative feelings can corrode faith from the inside out.

Shield – A knight’s shield was his primary defence, used to block swords, arrows and other weapons. Spiritually, our shield is our unwavering trust in God. When doubts or trials come, faith acts as a shield that defends us from evil attacks and blocks all negativity from penetrating our souls.

Greaves – Greaves covered the legs, enabling knights to move without fear of injury. Spiritually, our “legs” represent our walk with God. If our spiritual journey is compromised, we may stumble. Therefore, it’s essential to set aside quality time to invest in our relationship with the Most High.

Sword – Unlike the other pieces, the sword was an offensive weapon used in combat. In spiritual terms, the “sword” is the Word of God. Defending ourselves is not enough; we must actively use the Holy Scriptures to counter the devil’s lies and temptations. This is why it is crucial to constantly meditate on His Word – not simply memorising it, but understanding it and putting it into practice.

As we saw, each piece of armour played a vital role in protecting the knight’s body. Similarly, each spiritual precaution helps guard our faith in today’s world.
