In a moment of great conflict and division among the people of Israel, many were led astray from the commandments of God. The faith of the people wavered, and they found themselves torn between serving the one true God and the false gods of the surrounding nations. In this moment of uncertainty, Joshua stood before the congregation and declared:
“…But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Joshua’s words were not just a personal statement of faith, but a bold declaration to the people. He was asking them to make a decision—to stop wavering between God and other gods, between obedience and rebellion. His message was clear: make up your mind. Choose whom you will serve. No more indecision. No more going back and forth between two opposing thoughts.
But what makes this declaration so powerful? The answer lies in Joshua’s role as the head of his household. He didn’t ask his family members if they wanted to choose God. He didn’t leave the decision to them. Joshua, as the patriarch and spiritual leader of his home, made a decisive choice for his family.
Joshua’s words carry great weight because he claimed spiritual authority over his family. In a world where many people witness their families divided, separated, or drifting away from the faith, he took on the responsibility of guiding his family to serve the Lord.
This is what is often missing today. Many parents or heads of households see their families falling apart and feel helpless. But Joshua’s example reminds us that you have spiritual authority to claim your family for God, even if they haven’t yet made the choice to follow Him.
Your faith, as the spiritual leader of your home, can make a difference. While you may not be able to force anyone to follow Jesus, but you can declare that your family will serve the Lord.
If you’re witnessing you’re family deteriorate, remember that God has given you the authority — but you must use it to intercede for them and to pray for their salvation. While change may not be immediate, trust in His ability to bring about the transformation.
In addition to praying for the salvation of your family, we invite you to take a step of faith and join us for ‘The Sunday of the Bread of Life.’ At every Universal Church across the UK, we are encouraging you to bring a loaf of bread to be blessed.
Why bread? Jesus said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). Bread is a symbol of life, provision, and sustenance—just as Jesus is the sustainer of our souls.
When you break bread with your family this Sunday, let it be a symbol of God’s provision. As you eat together, let it be an act of faith, claiming that salvation will reach your home. The breaking of bread is a powerful declaration that, through Christ, your family will be drawn closer to Him. Just as Joshua declared, you too can stand firm and say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
