Last Thursday at the Cathedral of Miracles, we experienced another special evening of Love Therapy, continuing with the theme “Combating a Bland Love Life.” Bishop James and Helena Marques reminded us that words have power in a relationship. They can bring flavour and life, or leave things tasteless and strained.
Using Colossians 4:6 as the foundation, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” Bishop explained that our words hold extraordinary weight, they can build up or tear down. As Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” That makes it our responsibility to use words with wisdom.
While many of us communicate well in daily life, things often fall apart when it comes to relationships. We may know how to speak, but not with love. Bishop clarified that “speech with grace” means speaking with kindness. Too often, people excuse rudeness as “just being honest,” forgetting that honesty can and should be expressed with love.
Jesus gave us the perfect example when He met the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1–11). He forgave her with compassion, yet still told her, “Go and sin no more.” In marriage, we too must address issues, but always with gentleness and the intention to build up, not to accuse.
“Seasoned with salt” also means speaking with clarity. Many conflicts arise from assumptions. Instead of saying what we truly mean, we expect our partner to “just know,” which often leads to frustration on both sides.
Bishop reminded us that men, in particular, don’t always pick up hints. If you need help, ask. If you want something, say it plainly. Don’t assume your partner already knows. Even God, who knows everything, still asks us to pray and express our needs. Clear communication prevents misunderstandings.
Another key point was respect. A comment, no matter how well-intentioned, loses its value if delivered disrespectfully. True respect means allowing your partner to be themselves, rather than trying to mould them into a version of you. A word spoken with respect, love, and care has the power to transform any relationship.
This series, “Combating a Bland Love Life,” continues next week, offering more practical, biblical guidance to strengthen and restore your love life.
