One of the greatest challenges of the Christian life is the inner conflict between the flesh and the Spirit. Each day, a deep and decisive battle takes place within us. Many spiritual struggles do not happen because God is unwilling to bless us, but because of the tension between what the flesh desires and where the Spirit leads.
The flesh represents our emotions, personal will and desire for immediate satisfaction. The Spirit, on the other hand, guides us towards wisdom, obedience and faith. This is why, although the mind may say, “I want the Holy Spirit,” the heart often continues to pursue things that draw a person away from God.
Those who feed the flesh grow weaker. But those who nourish the Spirit through the Word of God grow stronger. For this reason, discipline and self-control are essential. This battle can only be won by those who are determined and fully committed.
God sees the sincerity of our efforts. When someone seeks Him half-heartedly, it becomes clear they are not giving their full strength. Jesus is the greatest example of self-denial, as described in Philippians 2. Although, He was in the form of God, He did not cling to equality with God. Instead, He made Himself nothing, taking the nature of a servant and becoming human. Though fully God, He became man. He experienced temptation, hunger, sorrow, and suffering, yet remained faithful to the Father. In doing so, He showed that true victory begins with denying oneself. To overcome the world, one must first overcome oneself.
Those who truly desire to receive the Holy Spirit dedicate all their strength, faith, and surrender to seeking Him. God knows every heart and sees every sacrifice. His promise therefore remains true: those who persevere, empty themselves, and put the Kingdom of God first will receive an answer.
Each person must choose which path to follow: the impulses of the flesh or the guidance of the Spirit. The flesh leads to death, but the Spirit leads to life. Therefore, feed the Spirit, practise discipline, and follow the example of Jesus — not only through religious teaching, but through daily choices that shape your faith and your eternity.
