Imagine two plants growing side by side, receiving the same care, sunlight and rain. They stretch upwards through the same soil, appearing identical in every way.
The first plant is wheat, a valuable crop rich in nutrients, used to make bread and nourish many people. As the wheat matures, its head becomes heavy with seeds and it bows down, symbolising humility and fruitfulness. However, growing alongside it is the tare – a deceptive weed that looks very similar but is entirely useless and even harmful.
Tares resemble wheat, especially when they are young, but they produce no edible grain. In fact, they can be toxic if consumed – causing symptoms like dizziness – and can be poisonous. While the tare stands upright – unlike the wheat –, it is hollow inside and serves no beneficial purpose.
The tare competes with the wheat for space, nutrients and light, draining vital resources from what could be a healthy and productive harvest. Their presence jeopardise the integrity of the crop. To the untrained eye, they may seem indistinguishable; however, during the harvest, the truth is revealed and the tare is exposed for what it truly is.
This is not just a matter of agricultural science but serves as a powerful metaphor that can echo through our spiritual life. It not only showcases the greatness and complexity of nature but also teaches an important lesson for those who wish to strengthen their faith and protect their relationship with God.
Which one represents you: the wheat or the tare? This Wednesday, 4 June, we invite you to reflect and learn this essential teaching meant not to judge but to awaken. It’s a call to self-examination, growth, and the kind of transformation that bears fruit not just for today but for eternity. Don’t miss it! Join us at your nearest Universal Church.
