The Hidden Risks Behind the “Vape Cloud” Among Today’s Youth

Vape Cloud

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes among young people. Their latest global estimate indicates that over 100 million people – approximately 15 million adolescents aged 13 to 15 – now vape. WHO warns that tobacco companies are employing aggressive marketing tactics online and using influencers to portray vaping as a safer alternative. However, this trend is leading to a new wave of nicotine dependence among youth.

The health dangers of vaping or smoking tobacco are significant, especially for adolescents and young adults. According to data published by PubMed, nicotine can adversely affect brain development, impairing memory, attention, impulse control and learning – effects that may persist into adulthood. Vaping also presents short-term risks, including throat irritation, coughing, shortness of breath and potential cardiovascular stress. Studies indicate that young people who vape are also more likely to transition to smoking later in life.

Behind the statistics are real stories – teenagers struggling with anxiety, peer pressure and a desire for acceptance. For many, vaping begins as a trend or a means of fitting in, but it can quickly evolve into a habit that negatively impacts their physical and emotional health.

It’s disheartening to see how early young people are targeted and trapped by this harmful trend disguised as a safe choice. Many parents and guardians only recognise the signs when their children are already significantly affected. Therefore, awareness, open conversations and the right support systems are more important than ever.
