The beginning of a new year often comes wrapped in hope. We make plans, set goals and imagine fresh starts. But once the festivities are over and everyday life settles back in, many people realise that not much has really changed. The same challenges remain, and that initial enthusiasm slowly fades into tiredness or frustration.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
It’s in these moments when we feel unsure, overwhelmed, or ready to give up that courage becomes so important. And the good news is that courage is something God talks about often in the Bible.
Take Joshua, for example. As he prepared to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, God told him, “Be strong and of good courage” (Joshua 1:6–7). Joshua faced a daunting task: guiding a nation into unknown territory, confronting enemies and uncertainty at every turn. God’s words reminded him that true courage comes from trusting Him, even when the task seems impossible.
Later, David spoke the same words to Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:20) as Solomon prepared to build the temple. David knew the task ahead was immense — not just in size, but in significance. David’s words encouraged Solomon to stay faithful, rely on God, and be bold, showing that courage grows from faith and obedience, not from the absence of fear.
Hezekiah urged the people, “Be strong and courageous” (2 Chronicles 32:7), at a time when they received a terrifying threat from the Assyrian army. He knew fear could paralyse them, but trust in God would give them the strength to stand firm.
Even Jesus reassured His disciples, saying, “…be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). He knew they would face trials, persecution, and uncertainty after His departure. His words were not a promise of an easy life, but a reminder that through Him, they could have peace and courage even when the world seemed against them.
All these examples show us that courage doesn’t mean life suddenly becomes easy. It means holding onto faith, even when circumstances are difficult, and choosing hope over despair. Those who are discouraged achieve nothing. It is with good cheer, with courage that we conquer the world.
This is why, on Sunday 11th January, the ‘Sunday of Good Courage’ will be taking place in all Universal Churches across the UK. It’s a special day for anyone who feels tired, unmotivated, or unsure if real change is possible this year.
We warmly invite you to join us, because no one overcomes challenges alone. Discouragement can weigh us down, but faith strengthens us, and a positive attitude prepares us for whatever lies ahead. Above all, it is God who enables us to face the future with confidence.
During the meeting, we will also partake of the Lord’s Supper — a powerful opportunity to renew your faith and strength for the year ahead.
Come as you are, and leave strengthened, encouraged, and ready to move forward.
