We live in a world where convenience is everywhere. Life is designed to be faster, easier and more comfortable than ever before. It might seem harmless, but when comfort begins to enter into our spiritual life, it can slowly become a problem.
If comfort isn’t managed properly, it leads to complacency. We stop pushing forward and often without even realising it, our spiritual strength begins to weaken.
That’s why challenges matter. Struggles are never pleasant, but they play an important role in our growth. Every difficulty we face and overcome builds maturity and resilience. Spiritual battles strengthen us on the inside and keep our faith active.
The opposite is also true. When there is no resistance, inner strength fades. In our spiritual life, this is particularly dangerous because spiritual complacency rarely arrives suddenly. Instead, it creeps in quietly until it becomes part of everyday life.
Very often, this happens after a victory. A prayer is answered, a blessing arrives, and we relax. Prayer becomes less frequent, vigilance disappears, and before you know it, comfort takes over. It happens when we stop watching over and guarding our faith.
So how can we recognise when this is happening? There are clear signs to look out for.
Here are seven common symptoms of spiritual complacency:
When these signs become part of a routine, faith stops being exercised. As a result, our communion with God weakens.
The Bible gives us a clear warning through the story of Samson (see Judges chapters 13–16). Although he was set apart for God from birth and used powerfully, he began to make compromises and rely on his own strength.
Over time, he lost his connection with God without realising it. When he finally became aware of what had happened, it was already too late — God was no longer with him. His story reminds us how easily spiritual complacency can creep in.
This is why faith must stay active. Praying, reading the Bible, maintaining communion with God and attending church regularly aren’t optional extras, they are essential.
The church, in particular, plays a crucial role in awakening, strengthening and challenging our faith so it can continue to grow.
This Sunday, 15th February, join us for ‘The Sunday to Combat Spiritual Complacency,’ taking place in all Universal Churches across the UK.
Each person will be guided to reflect on their own situation and bring it before God in prayer.
Don’t allow comfort to weaken your faith, affect your relationship with God or place your salvation at risk. Let’s take action and make the decision to draw closer to Him.
