Protecting Your Vision in a Screen-Heavy World

Eye Problems

In today’s world, with computers and smartphones becoming integral parts of daily life, excessive screen time has been negatively impacting the eye health of many people. Prolonged use of digital devices can cause digital eye strain – a vision-related issue characterised by symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches and discomfort in the neck or shoulders. This condition arises from factors such as reduced blinking, improper screen settings and extended focus on close-up tasks.

Maintaining good eye health is crucial for our overall well-being. Regular eye examinations can help detect issues like glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration early, when they are more treatable. Additionally, managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension can help prevent related eye problems. A balanced diet rich in nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, leafy greens and vitamins C and E supports eye health. Adequate sleep, regular physical activity and avoiding smoking further contribute to preserving vision.

Here are a few tips to help you protect your eye health:

  1. Follow the “20-20-20” rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This practice helps reduce eye strain and refreshes your vision.
  2. Adjust screen settings: Ensure your screen is positioned about 50–60 cm away from your eyes, and that the top of the screen is at or just below eye level. Also, adjust text size for comfort and reduce glare by positioning your screen away from direct light sources.
  3. Use proper lighting: Avoid working in dimly lit rooms or under bright overhead lights that cause glare. Use ambient lighting and position your screen to minimise reflections.
  4. Wear UV-protective sunglasses: Protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB light.
  5. Blink regularly and stay hydrated: Consciously blink more often to keep your eyes moist. Staying hydrated also helps maintain tear production and reduces dryness.
