On Sunday, 7th December, the new Universal Church in Leicester officially opened its doors to the public. It was a truly special occasion; more than 100 people attended, including members who travelled from Nottingham, Sheffield and Finsbury Park in London to witness this memorable moment.
Many first-time visitors attended the opening, drawn both by the event and by curiosity about the building works that had been taking place. Situated in a central location, the church aims to offer support to all those in need.
During the service, Bishop Allan Passos consecrated the Altar, determining that it will be a place where many will receive salvation. He delivered a message of hope based on 1 Corinthians 1:27 “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.”
The Bishop emphasised that those who feel despised, rejected, overlooked or insignificant are not here by mistake. The church exists to bring life, transformation and hope to anyone who feels they have reached their lowest point.
He explained that God looks for the weak, the rejected and the forgotten — not because they are unworthy, but because when a person recognises their need for God and surrenders completely, He can reveal His power by transforming their life. “God chose you so that, through the change in your life, people will know that He is God,” he said.
Long-standing members shared their excitement. Duncan Muchira commented that the first impressions of the new building were excellent. Having attended the previous location for a couple of years, he said we all have eagerly anticipated the move and followed the progress of the renovations. “The day is finally here, and we are very excited,” he said.
The opening also marked another milestone: the establishment of the second Victory Youth Group (VYG) centre, following the success of the first one in Nottingham last month. This new youth hub in Leicester attracted many young people on the day. The centre will serve as a dedicated space where youths can meet, socialise, practise for VYG performances and discuss issues that affect their daily lives.
The Universal Church in Leicester marks the beginning of a new chapter — a place where the community can find support, faith and a renewed sense of purpose.
