Is nail biting a sign of anxiety?

Nail biting

Onychophagia, also known as nail-biting, is an uncontrollable habit that is often linked to anxiety. This behaviour typically starts in early childhood and tends to escalate during adolescence.

Besides not being very hygienic, nail biting can lead to skin infections, fungal infections and cause mouth pain or tooth damage.

Moreover, individuals who swallow the bitten nails put themselves at risk for stomach or intestinal infections.

Nail-biting is frequently associated with anxiety because the act of chewing on nails is believed to alleviate stress, tension, or boredom.

Experts say that depending on the cause of the problem, some treatment may be necessary. Among those suggested are cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which helps to identify and modify unwanted behaviours, or, when associated with anxiety, the use of medication.

Any successful treatment of onychophagia requires the collaboration and consent of the child or adult who is biting their nails, along with positive reinforcement strategies and regular follow-ups.

A very important point is to understand why the person is doing this. If the cause is anxiety, it is possible to deal with it and overcome it.

If you are struggling to overcome the topics mentioned in this article, seek medical help, to receive treatment for your specific needs.

Furthermore, for spiritual support, we are here to help. The Bible says:

“Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.” (Proverbs 12:25).

When we tune into the Word of God, it calms us, makes us rest and trust in the midst of chaos. In fact, the Word is God Himself, Who comes in to remove worry and strengthen us.

By increasing your contact with the Word of God, His presence will sustain you in moments of need.
