In Times of Trouble, Keep Your Focus on God

Focus

In times of bad news, unexpected crises or sudden pressures, the human heart tends to lean toward fear, doubt and despair. However, those who keep a solid communion with God don’t focus on their problems; they focus on Him.

Faith doesn’t ignore reality – it simply refuses to be controlled by it. The Word of God teaches us that the key to victory lies in keeping our focus on Him, trusting in His direction and depending entirely on His power.

The book of 2 Chronicles tells the inspiring story of King Jehoshaphat of Judah and how he responded to an overwhelming threat that couldn’t be overcome by human strength. Here are three important lessons we can learn from his story:

  1. When fear comes, keep your focus on God and seek Him with all your strength

Jehoshaphat received terrifying news: a vast army was marching against him, and they were already near. Fear is a natural response when faced with situations beyond our control, but unlike many who, in times of fear, complain or turn away from God, Jehoshaphat chose the right response: he sought the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.

What made a difference in this story was Jehoshaphat’s attitude. He didn’t deny the threat but approached God with sincerity and reverence. He admitted that he didn’t know what to do, yet declared: “…Our eyes are upon You.” (2 Chronicles 20:12). This exemplifies true faith – not the absence of fear but the decision to place fear before God and trust that He knows exactly what to do. No matter how significant the problem or how unprepared you feel, turn to God. He answers those who call upon Him.

  1. Exalt the greatness of God above your problems

When Jehoshaphat prayed, he didn’t start by complaining or lamenting. His prayer was characterised by the exaltation of God’s greatness. He proclaimed that power and might are in God’s hands and that no enemy can withstand Him. This teaches us that, instead of magnifying our problems, we should magnify our God. By doing this, even amid trials, we demonstrate trust and confidence in His sovereignty.

  1. God has a direction for every battle

After the people prayed and humbled themselves before God, the answer came: “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15). There are battles in which God instructs us to act and others where He tells us to wait and trust. Therefore, spiritual discernment is essential to understand what He expects from us in each situation.

Jehoshaphat and his people obeyed. Early the next morning, they set out to face the enemy, praising the Lord. God set ambushes against their enemies, leading them to destroy one another. The entire battle was won by God’s power – a compelling reminder that when we follow His direction and keep our eyes on Him, He moves in extraordinary ways.

Instead of focusing on the size of your problem, direct your attention to the greatness of your God. Even when facing seemingly impossible situations, don’t take your eyes off Him. The same God who fought for Jehoshaphat continues to fight for those who trust in Him today.
