How to Stay Aligned with What Matters Most

School of Faith

We live in a world that constantly seeks to shape our thoughts, values and behaviours. These influences are often subtle, disguised as harmless trends and popular opinions – which makes them even harder to identify and avoid. The media, culture, and even some personal relationships can distance us from our faith and Christian principles without us even realising it.

If we allow ourselves to be swayed by these influences, we risk forgetting what God has done for us and become disheartened. This vulnerability can lead one to adopt negative external influences. We can see the Biblical example of the people of Israel, who often sought alliances with other nations instead of placing their complete trust in God, leading them to harmful customs and beliefs that were contrary to their faith.

The key to protecting yourself from negative influences is to invest in a relationship with God. Romans 12:2 states, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Therefore, it is crucial to remain vigilant and seek discernment from God, so we do not fall into situations that seem normal and harmless.

The most effective way to cultivate this discernment is through the source itself: the Word of God. The Bible serves as our ultimate guide and foundation, helping us distinguish between what aligns with God’s truth and what subtly leads us away. By immersing ourselves in the Word of God, we equip our minds and hearts with the wisdom and clarity needed to resist deception.

Every Wednesday, at the Universal Church, you have a perfect opportunity to do this.
