We live in stressful times, where it’s increasingly common for people to lose control over minor disagreements. Whether on the road, at work or at home, simple misunderstandings can escalate into arguments. A recent incident involving NFL player Mark Sanchez in Indianapolis, USA, exemplifies this troubling pattern of behaviour.
According to reports, the argument began when Sanchez and another driver disagreed over a parking space. The situation quickly turned physical, resulting in the NFL player being stabbed and the other man being arrested. What started as a trivial disagreement developed into a serious criminal case. Sanchez has now been charged with a felony and could also face prison time – a stark reminder that uncontrolled anger can have devastating consequences for everyone involved.
This incident mirrors the overreactions many of us may display under pressure and stress. What could have been a conversation or a respectful resolution turned into chaos. While some may argue that retribution preserves one’s dignity in such cases, the Bible warns us, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18).
Often, heated words, shouted insults or rash actions reveal a lack of wisdom in conflict. The Scriptures teach us about the value of restraint: “Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.” (Ephesians 5:4). The underlying principle is clear: we are encouraged to respond with self-control rather than emotional flare.
Staying calm in the heat of the moment can be challenging, but by walking with God, we can learn to respond with reason rather than reaction. This transformation doesn’t happen overnight; it develops daily as we ground ourselves in His Word and follow its guidance.
Are your reactions causing you trouble? Do you need strength and direction to overcome your impulses? At the Sunday morning services at the Universal Church, we teach how to develop a deeper communion with God – a connection that provides clarity and inner strength to act wisely in daily situations, allowing intelligent faith to guide you instead of being controlled by your emotions.
