Health Point Initiative Brings Free Blood Pressure Checks to Hammersmith Broadway

On Saturday 16 August, Hammersmith Broadway became a hub for health and wellbeing as the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God’s Patient Care Group (PCG) hosted its latest Health Point Initiative.

Volunteer healthcare professionals offered free blood pressure checks, alongside blood glucose, BMI and blood oxygen tests, as well as advice on heart health and lifestyle changes. Over the course of the day, 142 blood oxygen tests, 139 blood pressure checks, 81 blood glucose tests, and 71 BMI checks were carried out.

Importantly, 13 people were referred for further medical assistance, demonstrating the real value of preventative community health initiatives.

The event drew curious onlookers, with the sight of neatly arranged tables, chairs and medical equipment prompting many to stop and learn more. Volunteers provided not just check-ups but also a friendly conversation – something participants said made the experience even more valuable.

“It’s such a simple thing to do, but it can save lives,” said Marie, an NHS Administrator, who spent the day offering checks and answering questions. “One gentleman discovered his blood pressure was much higher than normal and was referred to make an appointment with his GP. That’s what these days are all about – early detection and prevention.”

James, a member of the public, said: “Thank you for this event – it’s exactly what our community needs. Getting a doctor’s appointment these days is really difficult, so having free checks like this is a real help. The staff and volunteers were so friendly and professional – it made the whole experience very pleasant.”

The Health Point Initiative is part of UCKG’s commitment to supporting public health and easing pressure on NHS services. Research commissioned by UCKG earlier this year found that 73% of Londoners believe faith-based organisations can play a vital role in tackling societal challenges – including improving community health access.

Volunteer, Doreen, summed up the atmosphere on the day: “I’d never done anything like this before, but I really enjoyed the day. I spoke with so many people, had my own checks done, and even learned I need to walk more! Overall, my results were good – and it reminded me just how important this service is for our community. We really do need more days like this.”
