How many times have we heard someone say, “It’s stronger than me,” “It’s just the way I am,” or “I couldn’t resist” after giving in to temptation? These words may sound convincing but the Bible teaches us something different: that our choices and actions before God are our own responsibility.
James 1:13-15 states: “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
In other words, temptation begins within us, stemming from the desires we allow to grow. The good news is that when we seek strength in God, nothing has the power to control us.
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
This verse reminds us that no matter how overwhelming temptation may feel, we are never alone in our struggle. God not only understands our battles but also provides us with a way to overcome them. The challenge is not whether victory is possible; it’s whether we are willing to reach for the strength He offers.
