Friday the 13th is a day traditionally associated with bad luck, often evoking fear and concern. This aversion even has a name: paraskevidekatriaphobia, which derives from the Greek words paraskevi (Friday), dekastreis (thirteen), and phobia (fear).
The number 13 itself is seen by many as a sign of misfortune. In ancient times, it was believed that it had a certain magnetism for negative events. Many associate this belief with Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. It’s said that he was the 13th guest at the Last Supper and his betrayal has cast a shadow over the number ever since. Others point to the beast and the Antichrist, described in Revelation 13, is an indication that the number 13 is inherently unlucky.
As a result, Friday the 13th is rarely seen as an ordinary day; instead, it’s shrouded in various superstitions that create a sense of unease and caution. On this day, many become more aware of their surroundings, as if something ominous is looming. The day often amplifies superstitious beliefs, which reinforces the notion of misfortune.
Despite the widespread curiosity or fear surrounding Friday the 13th, few people seek to understand the deeper spiritual forces at play or how to protect themselves from them. True protection doesn’t come from rituals or charms, but from a life aligned with God’s Word. This is how Christians spiritually fortify themselves and remain safe, whether it’s Friday the 13th or any other day of the year.
Faith is not rooted in superstitions but in the truth of God’s Word. However, the Bible teaches us that the battle we face is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces (see Ephesians 6:12). This highlights the importance of seeking protection from above. This is the purpose of our Spiritual Cleansing services, held on Fridays: to enlighten people about how evil forces operate and teach them how to use their faith to overcome negative spiritual influences.
