Have you or someone you know grown up in a household scarred by betrayal and vowed never to repeat those patterns, only to end up mirroring them later in life? You are not alone.
Many who commit betrayal cannot explain their actions. Even those who have always condemned infidelity and are irreproachable in other areas of their lives may, at some point, give in to this behaviour. This lack of understanding suggests that betrayal is not just a moral issue but also linked to deeper spiritual influences.
Betrayal does not happen overnight. It often begins with impure thoughts and small, everyday attitudes—such as lustful glances or fleeting unfaithful desires. Over time, these small moments can turn into habits that lead to significant consequences.
A recent example that highlights the nature of betrayal is the BBC reality show The Traitors. The first episode of the latest series has been watched by over 10 million viewers to date. In this social experiment, 25 strangers arrive at a castle as “Faithfuls,” but some are secretly chosen to be “Traitors.” The Faithfuls must identify and banish the Traitors before the game ends, while the Traitors must remain undetected to win the grand prize of £120,000.
Wilf Webster, 32, a former charity worker and contestant on the first UK series of the show, was cast in the role of a Traitor yet managed to win popularity among his fellow contestants. Following his experience, he has observed an increased prevalence of lying in day-to-day life. This habit practiced on the show has now manifested in his everyday behaviour, demonstrating how deception can quickly become second nature.
At the Love Therapy Seminar last week, we explored the next tool from The Tools of Intelligent Love and revealed the solution to betrayal: Soap and Water.
In our daily life, physical cleanliness is necessary to remove dirt and filth. Imagine trying to wash your hands using only soap or only water—it would be ineffective. Both elements must work together to cleanse properly. In the same way, betrayal is an accumulation of spiritual impurity that must be washed away. Mark 7:21 reminds us that evil, including betrayal, stems from the heart. Ezekiel 36:25 speaks of being cleansed from all filthiness, emphasising that only God can purify our hearts.
Just as we shower regularly to cleanse our bodies of unseen dirt and odours, we must also engage in daily spiritual cleansing. Soap and water were compared to God’s word and prayer. Daily immersion in the scriptures and fervent prayer allow us to resist negative influences.
Here are some practical steps to spiritual purity:
