Every year, as March approaches, shops begin filling their shelves with flowers, perfumes, chocolates and cards, and many people start searching for what they believe will be the “perfect” Mother’s Day gift. While these gestures are lovely and well-intentioned, it is worth asking a simple question: is that really what Mother’s Day is about?
The truth is that over time this meaningful occasion has become heavily commercialised. For many people, buying a gift is enough to mark the day. Yet no present, no matter how thoughtful or expensive, can truly replace what most mothers desire most: to feel recognised, loved and appreciated, not only once a year, but every day.
The Bible highlights the unique and powerful role of a mother within the family. In Proverbs 31, we read about the virtuous woman — known for her strength, wisdom and dedication. She cares deeply for her household, guides her children, and supports her family with generosity and love.
A mother teaches lessons that shape character, offers comfort during difficult moments and celebrates every success, big or small. Yet in the rush of daily life, the depth of her efforts can easily be overlooked.
Being a mother is far more than bringing a child into the world. It means walking beside them through every stage of life. It means encouraging them when they feel unsure, lifting them up when they fall and often placing their needs ahead of her own dreams. In many ways, a mother’s love reflects the closest human example we have of God’s unconditional love.
In the Ten Commandments, God gives a clear instruction about how we should treat our parents. In the Book of Exodus 20:12, we read: “Honour your father and mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.” Honouring our parents goes far beyond simple obedience during childhood. It involves respect, appreciation and care throughout our entire lives. It means listening to them, valuing their sacrifices and remaining present in their lives.
When this principle is ignored, the consequences can reach far beyond a single relationship. A lack of honour weakens family bonds and can lead to emotional and spiritual struggles that affect generations.
So, this Mother’s Day, rather than focusing only on finding the perfect gift, consider giving something that cannot be bought — your time, your attention and your gratitude. A phone call, a visit, a sincere conversation or simply sitting together can mean more than any bouquet of flowers. For many mothers, the greatest joy is knowing that their children remember them, appreciate them and care for them.
This Sunday, 15th March, you and your family are warmly invited to take part in a special moment of prayer at your local Universal Church.
It will be a meaningful opportunity to pray for your mother, thank God for her life and ask for His guidance and strength for your family. Together, we can reflect on the importance of honouring those who have cared for us with such devotion.
Because when it comes to mothers, the greatest gift is not something wrapped in paper — it is love shown through our actions every single day.
