Sunday 5 April marked the start of a meaningful 50-day journey of faith, designed to prepare our hearts and minds for Pentecost on 24 May. Inspired by the period after the resurrection of Jesus, when He remained with His disciples for 40 days, leading up to the moment when the Holy Spirit was poured out.
This year, the beginning of this spiritual purpose was marked in a powerful way. At the “Family at the Foot of the Cross” event on Good Friday, those present received a free bottle of blessed oil and took part in the first anointing, setting the tone for a period focused on faith, commitment, and spiritual growth.
The guidance is simple: each morning, before leaving the house, we are encouraged to anoint our head with the oil, presenting our lives before God and seeking the promise of the Father—the Holy Spirit.
At the same time, we are reminded of something essential: this journey starts within. Before turning our attention to anyone else, each of us is called to strengthen our own relationship with God. It means taking ownership of our spiritual life before anything else.
This principle is reflected in what happened after Jesus’ resurrection. Around 500 people heard His instruction to wait for the promise, yet only 120 remained steadfast until the end, and it was those 120 who received the Holy Spirit. The lesson is clear: not everyone who starts the journey finishes it, but those who persevere experience the promise.
This is why the 50-day purpose is more than simply counting down the days. It’s about consistency, faith, and making a daily decision to stay committed, even when it’s not easy.
Equally important is understanding the difference between having God alongside us and having Him within us. While Jesus walked with His disciples during His time on earth, after His ascension He sent the Holy Spirit – the Comforter, to dwell within believers. This inner presence brings strength, removes fear, and provides guidance in every area of our lives.
This purpose is open to everyone within the Christian faith, regardless of denomination. It’s an invitation for all those who believe to take part and draw closer to God.
Over these 50 days, the focus is simple: seek the Holy Spirit daily with faith and discipline. Rather than just remembering Pentecost, the aim is to experience it personally, allowing a real and lasting transformation to take place from within.
