A recent report from the Museum of Homelessness paints a heart-breaking picture: 1,611 homeless deaths were recorded in the UK last year. This marks a 9% increase from 2023, highlighting a crisis that continues to worsen each year. Among those who lost their lives, three-quarters were men, two-thirds were living in temporary or supported accommodation, 169 were sleeping rough and 12 were children. London accounted for the highest number of deaths overall.
Alison McGovern, the Minister for Homelessness, described these statistics as “deeply distressing”, stating that the government is “accelerating efforts to tackle the root causes” of the homelessness crisis in the UK.
At the Universal Church, our mission is to support those going through difficult times – both spiritually and physically. Through our Soup Kitchen and Food Bank initiatives, we provide warm meals, essential groceries and a caring atmosphere for individuals and families who may have nowhere else to turn. For many, visiting one of our locations is not only an opportunity to find nourishment but also a chance to remember they matter.
Our outreach extends further through the Universal Access Point, dedicated to helping those experiencing homelessness and similar issues reconnect with vital services. We work alongside local organisations to refer individuals to emergency shelters and housing assistance. Additionally, we offer computer access for those who need to complete job applications, manage benefit claims, or communicate with service providers – small steps that can significantly impact their journey towards stability.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our support, please reach out to our 24-hour Helpline (call 020 7686 6000 or send a WhatsApp message to 020 7686 6010) or visit your nearest Universal Church. There, you will find guidance, assistance and a safe harbour of peace and belonging.
This Saturday, 11 October, we will host the Universal Community Open Day at our headquarters in Finsbury Park. Click here for more details and feel free to join us!
Even in the hardest times, remember: you are not alone.
