When Success on the Outside Hides Pain Within

Success Outside

Former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle has recently spoken openly about the depression, addiction and mental health struggles that affected him for much of his life.

Carlisle enjoyed a 17-year professional football career, playing over 500 matches. During his career, he also served as chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association, and following his retirement, he went on to work in broadcasting. Yet, despite these achievements, he struggled with the loss of the routine, identity and sense of purpose that had shaped so much of his life.

His difficulties, including problems with alcohol and gambling, became increasingly serious, eventually leading to several suicide attempts. Today, Carlisle says he has been consistently well for several years. His experience has also become part of his purpose and he now uses his story to advocate for greater mental health awareness and support.

Although his story has thankfully taken a positive turn, it draws attention to the fact that outward success doesn’t always reflect what someone is experiencing within.

A person may continue working, smiling, looking after their family and carrying out their daily responsibilities while privately dealing with disappointment, fear, grief, rejection or painful memories they have never been able to overcome.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, the Bible says: “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

Some wounds go beyond what can be seen on the surface. There are pains that are carried deep within the soul, affecting the way a person thinks, feels and approaches life. In these cases, simply changing external circumstances may not be enough. What is needed is an inner transformation—one that reaches the root of the pain and brings peace and strength.

This is the principle behind “7 Steps to Inner Healing”, which is taking place on Sundays at all Universal Churches. Over seven weeks, participants receive a different step each week, encouraging them to reflect on what they have been carrying, strengthen their faith and seek God for spiritual healing and renewal.

Whatever challenges you may have been facing, your present circumstances don’t have to determine the rest of your story. Join us at your nearest Universal Church this Sunday and take a step towards peace, strength and a new beginning.
