Following the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday 24th June, volunteers from the Universal Church have come together to provide urgent support to those affected.
The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused widespread destruction, claiming lives and leaving many families without homes. In response, our volunteers across the country quickly mobilised to collect essential supplies, including food, clothing and bottled water, with distribution beginning immediately.
In the capital, Caracas, around 120 volunteers began assisting those left homeless, particularly in the Los Palos Grandes area. Alongside providing meals and drinking water to residents, volunteers have also been supporting the emergency services working tirelessly on the rescue operation, including Civil Defence, the police and the Fire Department.
Approximately 2,000 meals were prepared, along with 10,000 bottles of mineral water. Aid has been distributed in both Caracas and La Guairá, a coastal city badly affected by the earthquakes, where a further 100 volunteers have joined in providing assistance.
Pastor Djalma Bezerra, who oversees the work of the Universal Church in Venezuela said: “the aid effort will continue for as long as necessary. Many residents have no one
else to turn to, so we will continue helping for as long as there are people without homes and emergency workers supporting the victims.” Some of our own church buildings have also been affected, with cracks in walls, floors and damage to signs, but that has not stopped us. Our priority is to support those who need help most during this difficult time.”
While the recovery process is only just beginning, our volunteers continue to provide practical support, encouragement and hope to families facing an incredibly difficult moment. The response reflects the Universal Church’s ongoing commitment to serving local communities, especially in moments of crisis showing that acts of kindness can make a real difference.
